📰 News we're reading

1. Davis City Council passes measure to clarify, streamline outdoor dining program (sacbee.com) — Davis residents will see clearer, more consistent rules for outdoor dining after the City Council approved code changes aimed at boosting downtown restaurants and bars. The streamlined permitting system replaces the patchwork of pandemic-era and older rules, with existing outdoor dining spaces required to meet new standards by December 15, potentially affecting where and how you eat outside in downtown Davis.

2. Davis Phoenix Coalition names Sandré Henriquez Nelson as executive director (dailydemocrat.com) — Leadership at the Davis Phoenix Coalition is shifting as longtime director and former mayor Gloria Partida hands the reins to veteran nonprofit leader Sandré Henriquez Nelson, while staying on the board to guide the transition. Based in Davis and serving Yolo County, the coalition plans listening sessions, expanded fundraising, and more support for local LGBTQ+ youth, schools, and businesses in the coming weeks.

3. Davis opening trash contract to competition. Could Recology be replaced? (sacbee.com) — Davis is opening its trash, recycling, and compost contract to competitive bids, rather than automatically renewing with current hauler Recology Davis when the deal ends in 2029. With local rates higher than many neighboring cities, officials hope a public, multi-year process with extensive community input will clarify priorities, potentially reshape services, and influence what residents pay for waste collection.

4. UC Davis doctoral candidate Carla-Cristina de Melo Edwards receives the 2026 Medical, Urban, and Veterinary Entomology Student Recognition Award (dailydemocrat.com) — A UC Davis doctoral candidate in entomology, Carla-Cristina "CC" de Melo Edwards, has earned a national Medical, Urban, and Veterinary Entomology award plus a research grant supporting mosquito resistance studies in California. Her work at the Davis campus focuses on how yellow fever mosquitoes develop resistance to common insecticides, with potential implications for public health across the state.
