Authorities ID Woman Who Died In East Bay Apartment Fire

The woman died on Aug. 12, in what fire officials believe was a "cooking-related" blaze.

FREMONT, CA — Authorities have identified a woman who died following an apartment fire last week in Fremont.

The woman was identified by the Alameda County coroner as Nagalakshmi Ganesan, 87.

Fire crews responded to the blaze at an apartment at 4200 Irvington Ave. on Aug. 12 and found Ganesan severely injured in the hallway, according to the Fremont Fire Department.

She was taken to Washington Hospital, where she died from her injuries, according to the Fremont Fire Department.

In her obituary, Ganesan was described as a "devoted and compassionate nurse."

She moved to the United States in the mid-1990s and called Fremont home. She also spent time in Toledo, Ohio, and Chicago, Illinois, according to her obituary.

"Above all else, her life revolved around her family, her children, and her grandchildren," her obituary reads. "They were at the heart of everything she did and brought her the greatest joy."
