SMART Board Announces Geyserville Station Rail Project Decision

SONOMA COUNTY, CA —

The Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit District Board of Directors voted on the proposed Geyserville station that could advance an effort to restore passenger rail access to the community for the first time in nearly 70 years.

The board adopted the station into SMART’s program and approved the project on Wednesday.

SMART is pursuing funding to rebuild the 150-year-old publicly owned railroad and restore passenger rail service from Healdsburg to Cloverdale.

In June 2026, the board directed staff to begin public engagement on the proposed project.

Wednesday’s approval allows SMART to advance the station through regional planning, project development, and funding. The board’s action does not authorize construction, and SMART will need funding and additional implementation steps before construction can begin, according to the agency.

SMART said the Geyserville project does not change plans to extend passenger rail service Healdsburg and Cloverdale.

The agency said adding Geyserville to its program strengthens efforts to complete the voter-approved passenger rail system from Larkspur to Cloverdale, while increasing connections between communities and creating another opportunity to seek funding for the northern extension.

SMART is evaluating a station location near Highway 128 and Remmel Road within its existing railroad right-of-way and the Geyserville Urban Service Area. The proposed site sits near homes, jobs, businesses, community destinations, and connecting bus service.

“Bringing passenger rail service to central Geyserville at the heart of the Alexander Valley is an investment in the economic future of Sonoma County,” said SMART Board Member and Healdsburg City Councilmember Ariel Kelley.
