1 Killed, 3 Rescued After Car Plunges Off Angeles Crest Highway

LA CAÑADA FLINTRIDGE, CA — A man in his 20s was killed and three other people were injured after a vehicle plunged hundreds of feet off Angeles Crest Highway late Wednesday, authorities said.

The crash was reported at about 10:10 p.m. near mile marker 26-50, according to the California Highway Patrol. Authorities have not indicated what caused the vehicle to veer off the winding mountain road.

Pasadena police and firefighters joined crews from the Los Angeles County Fire Department, Glendale Fire Department and Montrose Search and Rescue in reaching the heavily damaged vehicle.

“Personnel utilized the jaws of life to extricate each person who were then brought up the steep terrain in a rescue basket,” Pasadena Fire Department spokeswoman Lisa Derderian said.

A man in his 20s died from his injuries. The three survivors — another man and two women, all in their early 20s — suffered moderate to significant injuries and were taken to a trauma center, Derderian said.

The survivors are from Orange County, Pasadena Now reported.

One firefighter suffered a knee injury during the rescue and was taken to an emergency room, according to Derderian.

Both directions of Angeles Crest Highway were closed while crews conducted the rescue operation.

The Pasadena Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team is investigating the crash, Pasadena Now reported.

Information about who was driving was not immediately available.
