1. 21-year-old woman killed in suspected street-racing crash in Mission Viejo (presstelegram.com) — A young woman was killed Thursday night in a suspected street-racing crash at Los Alisos Boulevard and Mustang Run in Mission Viejo, and two drivers have been arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence. Investigators are still determining key details and are asking anyone with information to contact the Orange County Sheriff's Department or submit anonymous tips to Crime Stoppers.
   

2. Man Who Shot 21-Year-Old Girl In Mission Viejo Sentenced (patch.com) — A man has been sentenced to eight years in prison for shooting a 21-year-old woman behind a business near Marguerite Parkway and La Paz Road in Mission Viejo in 2021. Deputies say the incident followed reports of domestic violence in San Clemente and a hit-and-run, and the victim was hospitalized after being shot.
   

3. From tiny carriers, a huge problem: Record West Nile spread this year (dailynews.com) — West Nile virus activity has surged across Southern California, and Mission Viejo is part of Orange County's aggressive response, including releasing 3,000 sterilized male mosquitoes locally to curb disease-carrying populations. Health officials urge residents to eliminate standing water, maintain yards and screens, and use repellent, stressing that even tiny water sources can breed hundreds of mosquitoes.
   

4. Photos: High school football returns under the lights on Friday night (dailynews.com) — High school football under the lights is back, with Mission Viejo hosting Chaparral in a nonleague matchup that featured multiple touchdown grabs by Diablos receiver Luke Karby. A large Southern California photo gallery also highlights San Clemente, Tustin, Serra, Palos Verdes, Oaks Christian, Chaminade, Notre Dame and Crespi as teams kicked off the 2026 season.
