Local Event: UC Master Gardeners Fall Faire (patch.com) — Napa gardeners and families can head to the free UC Master Gardeners Fall Faire on Saturday, Sept. 26, from 1–4 p.m. at 1710 Soscol Avenue. You'll find plant sales, kids' activities, tool-sharpening tips, local groups like the Napa Valley Orchid Society, plus food and live music, all focused on practical, firewise and year‑round gardening in Napa County.
   

2. Former Vintage soccer coach Dennis Sweeney dies in Napa (napavalleyregister.com) — Napa's soccer community is mourning longtime coach Dennis Sweeney, who led Vintage High boys teams to multiple league titles and a Sac-Joaquin Section championship before later working with Napa United and Napa Pride. Friends recall how he returned to Napa after college coaching success to be near family and helped shape generations of local players before his death at 71 from throat cancer.
   

3. Napa LAFCO executive officer removed, interim hired amid controversial American Canyon annexations (pressdemocrat.com) — Napa County's LAFCO board has removed its executive officer, Brendon Freeman, and appointed David Key as interim leader just as it weighs two major American Canyon annexations totaling nearly 400 acres. Residents from the Watson Lane area are questioning the timing, pushing for transparency, and preparing for a November protest hearing that could halt or force an election on one annexation.
   

4. employment-job-market-sonoma-solano-marin-mendocino-napa-lake (fresnobee.com) — Napa residents are seeing one of the lowest unemployment rates in California at 4.3%, even as the county's labor force shrinks and job growth flattens. A Sonoma State economist warns that falling unemployment across the North Bay, including Napa, is driven more by fewer people working or seeking work than by strong job creation, especially outside healthcare and services.
   

5. MCE moves toward reducing 34-member board (marinij.com subscription) — Napa County residents served by MCE could see changes in how their green-energy provider is governed as its 34-member board begins a two-year overhaul of roles and structure. Some directors, noting one member already represents Napa County and four Napa cities, are pushing to explore shrinking the board sooner to improve accountability and effectiveness.
