2. Tropical orcas make rare showing off California coast (mercurynews.com) — Residents and whale‑watchers off Newport Beach were treated to rare sightings of a pod of Eastern Tropical Pacific orcas cruising just offshore, thrilling local tour boats and families. The pod of about 13 whales, including calves, moved north from Dana Point past Newport Beach and Huntington Beach. Naturalists say the elusive whales appear only occasionally, so operators are watching closely in case they linger nearby.

4. A Tale of Two Shores: San Clemente, Newport Beach and the Search for Sand in OC (voiceofoc.org) — Newport Beach is moving quickly to add about 100,000 cubic yards of sand to its beaches ahead of a predicted strong El Niño, contrasting sharply with San Clemente's struggle to fund major replenishment.
