$34M Fire Station Project Breaks Ground On SMC Coast

The new facility will replace a flood-prone station and is expected to be completed next year, officials said.

SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA — Construction began Monday on a new fire station designed to improve emergency response along the South Coast, county officials said.

The new Fire Station 59 will be built at 340 Butano Cutoff, next to Pescadero Middle/High School.

Officials said the station will replace the current facility on Pescadero Creek Road, which was built in 1957 and has experienced repeated flooding.

The new 12,000-square-foot station will provide living quarters and emergency response facilities for firefighters serving the South Coast. It is designed to support responses to wildfires, winter storms, medical emergencies, coastal rescues and incidents along Highway 1 and surrounding roads.

The station will also include a solar-powered microgrid and backup power system intended to keep operations running during extended power outages, officials said.

Crews from Truebeck Construction are expected to begin site work Monday, including fencing installation, site preparation and grading.

Construction is expected to continue through 2027, with substantial completion anticipated by late summer. A groundbreaking ceremony will be announced at a later date.

The existing station will remain operational throughout construction.

Residents traveling along Butano Cutoff and Pescadero Road may notice increased construction traffic near the site, officials said.

The approximately $34 million project is funded through Measure K, San Mateo County's voter-approved half-cent sales tax. The Board of Supervisors awarded the construction contract to Truebeck earlier this year.
