COACHELLA, CA — The city of Coachella celebrated Thursday the groundbreaking ceremony of the roughly $50 million Avenue 50 bridge infrastructure project over the Coachella Valley stormwater channel.

The event was held at 9 a.m. Thursday at Sierra Vista Park, located at 50530 Tyler St. Participating attendees included Mayor Frank Figueroa, city councilmembers and the Coachella Valley Association of Governments.

The project aims to replace the existing low-water crossing on Avenue 50 and enhance roadway safety, mobility and to improve connectivity. Officials said the bridge will eliminate flood-related hazards. Improvements will include the widening of Avenue 50 from a two-lane roadway to a major six-lane artery and the realignment of Tyler Street.
