Museum Honors Black History All Year Long In Redwood City

The museum offers an extensive, year-round collection celebrating the achievements and profound contributions of Black Americans.

REDWOOD CITY, CA — While February marks Black History Month nationwide, the local Domini Hoskins Black History Museum celebrates the achievements, culture, and profound contributions of Black Americans all year long.

What began as a traveling exhibit to educate children has since found a permanent home in Downtown Redwood City at 890 Jefferson Ave.

The museum, founded by curator Carolyn Hoskins, offers an extensive collection covering more than 400 years of Black history and heritage.

Exhibits span topics like slavery and segregation, alongside celebrations of Black brilliance in areas such as inventions, music, and sports.

Hoskins was inspired to begin her work in 2001 after a pointed question from her grandson, Domini Hoskins, during a Black History Month event:

“Weren’t there any other Black people who did anything besides Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.?”

This question highlighted a gap in cultural literacy that Hoskins has since dedicated herself to addressing.

Her collection and community resources now form the basis of the Domini Hoskins Black History Museum, named in her grandson’s honor.

The museum’s mission is to be a source of pride and education for all ages, emphasizing that African American history is an inseparable part of the broader American story.

From rare artifacts to powerful exhibits, the institution celebrates the resilience and beauty of the shared history, preserving legacies that deserve recognition far beyond the 28 days of February.
