📰 News we're reading

• Stanford donates land in Redwood City for free cancer patient lodging (rwcpulse.com) — Stanford Health Care is donating land at 1125 Arguello Street in Redwood City for the West Coast's first American Cancer Society Hope Lodge, offering free lodging to out-of-town cancer patients and families. The lodge is part of a massive proposed cancer center expansion that could add a 470-bed hospital, research and clinic buildings, thousands of jobs, and will soon go through Redwood City's public review process.

• It All Started With a Man Named 'Red' (rwcpulse.com) — Redwood City's parks and recreation story traces back to 1937 and a tireless first recreation director, Alfred "Red" Morton, who juggled a full-time trucking job while building local leagues and playground programs. His efforts helped launch the city's Park and Recreation Commission, early partnerships with Sequoia High School, and the cooperative model that still shapes today's Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department.

• How to prepare for California's new fire-smart landscaping guidelines (rwcpulse.com) — New statewide "Zone 0" fire-smart landscaping rules will soon apply to high-risk areas including Redwood City's Emerald Hills, requiring homeowners to clear combustible plants and materials within five feet of their homes. Local fire officials and designers explain how residents can stay compliant while preserving privacy and greenery, using nonflammable ground covers, metal screens, pruning, and home-hardening upgrades phased in over several years.
