1. 4 things to know — WCCUSD tightens security at graduations; kitten refugees from Orange County chemical emergency (richmondside.org) — West Contra Costa schools are tightening security at this week’s high school graduations, adding metal detectors or wanding and banning bags after a deadly shooting in Fairfield. Richmond families can also sign kids up now for two city‑run summer camps at neighborhood community centers and the Richmond Recreation Complex, while local groups are invited to apply for new county wildlife‑habitat grants.

2. Richmond nears budget deadline with numerous questions unanswered (richmondside.org) — Richmond’s city budget is still unresolved after a tense council meeting abruptly ended without a vote, leaving staff unsure how to close a looming June 30 deadline. Leaders are weighing whether to keep a lean, vacancy-heavy budget or shift millions toward unfunded projects like parks, trails, fire station upgrades, and an e-bike lending library, potentially pulling money from programs serving youth, immigrants, and unhoused residents.

3. Wildcat Fish Passage Implementation Project (ca.gov) — Expect weekday lane delays in North Richmond starting June 15 as Contra Costa County begins a months-long Wildcat Creek fish passage and drainage project funded in part by the City of Richmond. Work will upgrade the creek’s fish ladder, expand a sediment basin, and improve flood protection for upstream neighborhoods along Pittsburg Avenue, Parr Boulevard, and Fred Jackson Way.

Participants will learn reporting skills while producing stories for Richmond Confidential, helping bring more community-driven coverage to Richmond and the wider county.
