Former Acting U.S. Attorney Found Dead In San Diego Federal Building (patch.com) — San Diego readers are learning more about the sudden death of former acting U.S. Attorney Andrew Haden, who was found in an office at the Edward J. Schwartz Federal Building downtown after being reported missing. Authorities say there are no signs of foul play, and the county medical examiner will determine the cause of death, while colleagues remember his years of service in the Southern District of California and ties to the University of San Diego School of Law.

Man Wanted In Poway Attempted Murder Case: Sheriff's Office (patch.com) — Residents across San Diego County are being asked to help locate a man wanted in an attempted murder that left a woman critically injured at a Poway home on August 11. Sheriff's investigators say the suspect, who has ties to the San Diego area, Los Angeles County and Mexico, may have fled the country, and Crime Stoppers is offering a reward for tips leading to his arrest.

Arson; Drive-By Shootings; Fatal Beating; Series Of Sexual Batteries: San Diego County Crime Log (patch.com) — San Diego County residents are seeing a busy week of public safety news, from deadly shootings and a fatal beating to major brush fires in Dehesa and Sorrento Valley that triggered evacuations. The roundup also highlights arrests in high-profile arson and homicide cases, a series of sexual batteries on female hikers, and several serious crashes and jail incidents affecting communities across the region.
   

4. Waymo is preparing to launch its driverless ride service for the public in San Diego, with the company saying it hopes to begin picking up customers in the next few months. – NBC 7 San Diego (nbcsandiego.com) — San Diego residents could soon hail fully driverless Waymo robotaxis, as the company moves from employee-only testing in neighborhoods like Hillcrest to public rides within the next few months. State regulators have already cleared autonomous operations in select cities, and Waymo says each incident in other markets has led to safety improvements across its fleet as it trains on local streets here.
   

5. USS Abraham Lincoln heads home after record-breaking deployment (10news.com) — A San Diego–based aircraft carrier, the USS Abraham Lincoln, is finally heading home after a record 272 days at sea, with its arrival expected in just over a month. Local families, including one San Diego father whose son serves aboard, are preparing for an emotional reunion while hoping the crew gets rest stops after a long, war-extended deployment.
