SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA — As we head into the new week, we've rounded up the stories you may have missed Saturday and Sunday to prepare you for Monday.

But before we jump into Southern California's top stories, residents should expect a gradual cooling trend after a stretch of very hot conditions, according to the National Weather Service.

"Gradual cooling trend through the middle of the upcoming week," NWS San Diego forecasters wrote Sunday. "For Tuesday and Wednesday, increased high cloud cover continues to look likely, but precipitation chances have decreased. Gradual warming for the latter half of next week, with temperatures remaining near or slightly above average. Night and morning coastal low clouds expected most mornings this week, reaching into the western valleys at times."

In other news, a former school janitor admitted to molesting girls; a police officer was struck by a vehicle while investigating a crash; and a roller coaster at Magic Mountain has been linked to multiple brain injuries and two recorded deaths.

Also, a donkey was fatally struck by a vehicle; a trapped mama bear and her cubs were rescued from a water tank; and police shot a dog who attacked an officer.

Plus, a federal judge in California said the U.S. government is unconstitutionally silencing critics of Israel's war in Gaza and others as part of the Trump administration's quest to deport noncitizens who it says disrupted college campuses while expressing their views.
