Homeless Man In Critical Condition After Being Struck By Off-Duty SF Officer: Report

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — A homeless man was hospitalized Monday morning after being hit by an off-duty San Francisco police officer driving in North Beach, according to a San Francisco Chronicle report.

Police say the homeless man had been lying or sitting on the ground in an alleyway behind Central Station when the officer turned left into the alleyway and struck him, according to the report.

The homeless man started "screaming and yelling," as the officer stopped and called first responders, according to the report, which said the man was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

The officer, who was off-duty at the time of the crash, was identified by the San Francisco Chronicle as third-generation policeman Michael Petuya.

Petuya is featured in the San Francisco Police Department's recruitment videos online.

In a video, Petuya says his family has had roots in San Francisco since 1904. He joined the department in 2015.

"His family built their lives here... created roots that still shape the city today," the post reads. "And now, he carries that forward — showing up for the city while helping shape what comes next."
