SF High School Baseball Team Ordered To Forfeit Games After Investigation Into Racist Taunts (patch.com) — San Francisco families are learning that Lowell High School's varsity baseball team must forfeit three games this season after an investigation found the players acted unsportsmanlike during an alleged racist taunt at a May game. The sanctions also require both varsity and junior varsity squads to complete training on implicit bias, bullying, hazing, and inappropriate behavior, as district leaders stress there is no place for racism in SFUSD.

Cat Dead, 3 Firefighters Injured In San Francisco Blaze: Authorities (patch.com) — San Francisco residents in Bernal Heights woke up Thursday to a serious house fire on Anderson Street that left seven people displaced and three firefighters hospitalized with minor burns. The San Francisco Fire Department battled heavy flames for nearly an hour, but one cat died despite their efforts, while another pet and residents escaped. Officials are now investigating the cause as neighbors cope with the damage and disruption.

3. Meet Hazel, San Francisco Police's Newest K9 (patch.com) — San Franciscans are getting to know Hazel, the San Francisco Police Department's newest K9, introduced for National Police K9 Day. Unlike traditional police dogs, Hazel is being trained as a therapy dog to provide comfort and emotional support to SFPD officers. The department is highlighting her calming presence and lighthearted personality as part of its wellness efforts.

4. San Francisco firefighters rescue person trapped inside garbage truck (wsvn.com) — San Francisco firefighters rescued a man who ended up trapped inside a Recology garbage truck near the Powell Street BART station early Wednesday morning, after someone alerted the driver to cries from the truck. More than 20 firefighters spent over an hour removing trash to free him; he was taken to the hospital, while one firefighter suffered a minor laceration requiring stitches.

5. City College of San Francisco's 'Sentinels' Return To Post (inglesidelight.com) — City College of San Francisco has reinstalled the bronze sculpture "Sentinels" outside its Student Success Center at Ocean Avenue and Frida Kahlo Way, after years in storage and a recent conservation. On permanent loan from the San Francisco Arts Commission, the nine-and-a-half-foot artwork now completes a trio of major public pieces on campus and is prominently visible to neighborhood passersby.
