Sheriff opposes proposal to house convicted rapist Michael Cheek in Santa Cruz Mountains (mercurynews.com) — Santa Cruz County's sheriff is opposing a proposal to house convicted rapist Michael Cheek at a remote home in the Santa Cruz Mountains, citing safety risks, poor access, and proximity to schools and family areas. A Santa Cruz County judge will consider the placement on October 30, and residents can submit written comments to the District Attorney's SVP Unit before the hearing.
   

2. PV Arts showcases Open Studios Art Tour (pajaronian.com) — Santa Cruz County art lovers can soon preview the Open Studios Art Tour at three galleries, including the Santa Cruz Art League and M.K. Contemporary Art Gallery in downtown Santa Cruz. Pajaro Valley Arts' Watsonville exhibit and the countywide studio weekends in October will showcase more than 60 South County artists and many more from across the region, with maps and details available online.
   

3. Weather changes lead to improved surfcasting (santacruzsentinel.com) — Surfcasters around Santa Cruz are seeing better perch and striped bass action as shifting fall swells reshape local beaches from Pajaro up to Davenport. White seabass and halibut are active near the bull kelp beds when winds allow, while tuna remain offshore and salmon season is closed locally but still open farther north.

UC Santa Cruz study finds wealthier Californians have more access to public beaches (ksbw.com) — Researchers at UC Santa Cruz found that wealthier Californians enjoy easier access to the state's public beaches, despite laws meant to keep the coastline open to everyone. Their study highlights barriers like gated access and transportation costs, and suggests better transit, infrastructure, and community-driven planning to help lower-income residents, including those in nearby Watsonville, benefit more fully from the coast.
