📰 News we're reading

1. Ahead of Bonita shelter closing, county animal service asks for public help (kpbs.org) — Santee is about to get a new county animal shelter off Riverview Parkway and Magnolia Avenue when operations move from Bonita on October 15, bringing larger kennels, medical suites, and more parking. Residents in unincorporated areas will use the Santee Animal Shelter, while city of Santee residents should still call San Diego Humane Society for animal control issues. The county is urging people to foster or adopt now to ease the transition for pets and staff.

2. North Palisade Partners Breaks Ground on Palisade Santee Commerce Center After $22.75M Land Buy (cremarketbeat.com) — A major redevelopment is underway at the former Santee Drive-In site, where a 290,000-square-foot Class A warehouse complex is now under construction and slated to open in late 2027. The Palisade Santee Commerce Center will add scarce modern industrial space to the city's established corridor, potentially bringing new tenants, jobs, and activity to North Woodside Avenue and the surrounding area.

3. Friday's temperature hit 100 or higher in nearly 20 San Diego County communities (sandiegouniontribune.com) — Santee baked under a scorching 112-degree high on Friday, one of nearly 20 San Diego County communities that hit triple digits as a heat wave settled in. Forecasters say Saturday will likely be even hotter, with records already tied or broken in several cities. Residents should plan for extreme heat conditions through the weekend and take precautions outdoors.

4. San Diego's Top Doctors: The Annual List, 2026 (sandiegomagazine.com) — Several physicians practicing in Santee made this year's San Diego County "Top Doctors" list, including OB/GYN and pediatrics specialists at Sharp Rees-Stealy on Cuyamaca Street and Children's Primary Care on Cuyamaca Street. The extensive countywide guide highlights peer-nominated doctors across more than 100 specialties, giving local families more options when choosing trusted medical care close to home.
