📰 News we're reading

1. Resident Finds Military Ordinance on Grace Drive During Home Renovation (southpasadenan.com) — South Pasadena police and the LASD Bomb Squad responded after a resident renovating a home on Grace Drive found what looked like a military ordnance in a closet. Experts determined it wasn't a threat, destroyed it on-site, and removed it for safekeeping. Officials remind residents to avoid touching suspicious items and call 9-1-1 immediately.

2. Mission Street Road Restriping Schedule (southpasadenan.com subscription) — Mission Street in South Pasadena will get fresh striping between Fair Oaks and Garfield from August 31 to September 4, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with some minor delays expected. Crews will repaint lane lines, bike lanes, and crosswalks using more reflective materials to improve nighttime visibility. Residents can call Public Works Director Julian Lee with any questions.

3. South Pasadena Discusses Replacing Flock Surveillance (outlooknewspapers.com) — South Pasadena officials are moving to replace Flock's automated license plate reader cameras with a new system from SoundThinking after concerns about data security and privacy. The proposed three‑year, $249,107 contract would swap out 27 cameras, while residents remain sharply divided over whether citywide ALPR surveillance is worth the privacy trade‑offs and are urging deeper study and possibly a public vote.

4. South Pasadena Cracks Down on Overnight Parking (outlooknewspapers.com) — Overnight street parking in South Pasadena just got stricter: cars are now banned from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. with no 30‑minute grace period unless they have a valid permit. City leaders say the change responds to rising complaints and future housing‑driven parking demand, while slightly extending temporary permits but keeping the 72‑hour parking limit.

5. Teen arrested, accused of cutting down Flock camera in Temecula (dailynews.com) — A Temecula teen was arrested after deputies recovered a stolen Flock license plate reader camera that had been cut down and taken away. The case comes amid growing criticism of Flock surveillance technology, which has prompted some Southern California cities, including South Pasadena, to change how they use the cameras and share data.
