CT Students May Get Free Breakfast Under Lamont Budget Plan

Funding for free breakfast for all K-12 public school students is included in Gov. Lamont's new budget proposal.

Gov. Ned Lamont's budget proposal includes funding to provide free breakfast for all K-12 public school students in Connecticut.

Lamont asserted the $12.5 million investment would ensure children have access to a healthy meal at the beginning of the school day.

“A healthy breakfast provides kids with the opportunity to start the day ready to learn and thrive, and too many of our young people do not have access to this basic life necessity,” Lamont said. “Every child, regardless of their family’s income, should be able to start the day with a healthy meal.”

Education Commissioner Charlene M. Russell-Tucker said the proposal would eliminate both financial barriers and social stigma that can affect student well-being, "ensuring every child can begin the school day nourished and prepared to learn."
