CT Taxes Among Highest In The Country, New Study Says

A new study compares tax rates among the 50 states and Washington, D.C. Here's where Connecticut ranks.

Connecticut has the third-highest taxes in the country, according to a new study from personal finance site WalletHub. Only New York and Illinois have higher taxes.

With the tax-filing deadline of April 15 coming up, WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia against national medians to see where taxpayers pay the least and the most.

Here are Connecticut's rankings in various categories with lower rankings tied to higher taxes:

  • Income taxes: No. 16
  • Real estate taxes: No. 49
  • Vehicle property taxes: No. 43
  • Sales and excise taxes: No. 28

Overall, the median household in Connecticut pays $11,838 in local and states taxes annually, which is 32% higher than the national average.

“Every year during tax season, Americans are reminded of just how much of their hard-earned income isn’t theirs to keep," WalletHub Analyst Chip Lupo said. "Living in the right state can ease the stress of tax time, though, as taxpayers in the least expensive states pay less than half as much as those in the most expensive states.”

Across the country, 66% of Americans think their tax rates are too high. However, 78% of Americans are more worried about affordability than taxes right now, WalletHub found.

  • New York
  • Connecticut
  • Pennsylvania
  • New Jersey

Here are the states with the lowest tax rates:

  • Alaska
  • Delaware
  • Wyoming
  • Idaho
  • Montana
