Go On The Ultimate 'Odyssey' At Avon Library This Week

AVON, CT — Why has a nearly 3,000-year-old story about a warrior's difficult journey home continued to capture readers' imaginations?

That question will be at the center of an upcoming program at the Avon Free Public Library exploring Homer's "Odyssey" and its influence on literature and popular culture.

"The Odyssey: A Timeless Journey" is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, in the library's Community Room.

Vincent Tomasso, a professor of classics at Trinity College, will lead the discussion.

The program will examine why the ancient Greek epic has endured for thousands of years and how its themes continue to resonate with modern audiences.

"The Odyssey" follows Odysseus as he attempts to return home to Ithaca following the Trojan War, encountering storms, temptation, mythical creatures and the wrath of the gods along the way.

Tomasso will also discuss the story's continuing influence on contemporary popular culture, including Christopher Nolan's film adaptation.

The in-person program is open to longtime readers of "The Odyssey" as well as those encountering the story for the first time.
