How Do Elections Work? Avon Library Has The Answer

AVON, CT — The Avon Free Public Library will host “What Happens After You Vote?,” an in-person program offering a behind-the-scenes look at how elections are administered in Connecticut.

The event is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 27, at 6:30 p.m. at the Avon Free Public Library, 281 Country Club Road.

Mara Suttmann-Lea, an associate professor of American politics at Connecticut College and a registrar of voters, will lead the discussion.

According to the library, the program will explain who runs Connecticut elections, how ballots are kept secure, and why local election officials play a central role in the process.

Suttmann-Lea will also discuss what happens behind the scenes during voter registration, ballot casting, canvassing, and election certification, as well as how elections are administered across different jurisdictions.

Suttmann-Lea specializes in elections and studies ways to strengthen access to and confidence in American democracy, ensuring voters have accurate information about participating in the democratic process.
