When Disaster Hits Avon, What You Need To Know: Library Program
Avon's fire chief will lead a free emergency preparedness program Wednesday covering home readiness, town response, and volunteering.

AVON, CT — Avon residents can learn how to prepare their homes for emergencies, how the town responds to disasters, and how volunteers can help during a free program Wednesday evening.
"The 1-2-3 of Emergency Preparedness" will be held Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 6:30 p.m. at the Avon Free Public Library.
The in-person program will be presented by Avon Fire Chief Bruce Appell, Avon's director of emergency management, fire marshal, and Avon Volunteer Fire Department fire chief.

The presentation will focus on three areas:
- Personal preparedness at home: Practical steps residents can take to prepare for natural or human-caused disasters and an overview of potential impacts.
- Community preparedness: How Avon is organized to respond to emergencies through its Emergency Operations Plan, Emergency Operations Center, primary shelter location, town buildings, and staff.
- Helping the community: Volunteer opportunities through the Avon Volunteer Fire Department, Avon's Community Emergency Response Team, and other local programs.
