ELLINGTON, CT — A man picking up cans on the side of a road in Ellington was hit by his own car, state police said.

The incident took place Friday at 6:49 a.m.

According to a state police crash report, a 79-year-old Vernon man was heading west on Middle Butcher Road in Ellington in a 2012 Lexus RX350 when he stopped to pick up some cans on the side of the road.

The man neglected to put the vehicle in park and it continued to move forward and hit him, according to a crash report.

The Lexus then hit a utility pole before coming to a final rest, according to a crash report.

The man was taken to HartfordHealthcare Rockville with suspected minor injuries, state police said. The man was issued a verbal warning for improper parking.
