FARMINGTON, CT — Black bear sightings have already been reported dozens of times in Farmington so far in 2026, according to new state data.

The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection reports 61 sightings in Farmington this year as bears emerge from winter and begin searching for food.

Across Connecticut, hundreds of sightings have been logged in recent months, with activity reported in communities throughout the state:

Wildlife officials say spring marks the start of peak bear activity, as black bears leave their dens and look for easily accessible food sources in residential areas.

Sightings data is used to track where bears are most active, though it does not reflect the total bear population. Reporting can vary depending on how often residents spot and report bears.

Black bears have become increasingly common in Connecticut in recent years, with the population expanding into more suburban communities. State officials estimate there are between about 1,000 and 1,200 bears statewide.
