Putnam Hill DAR Announces Essay Contests for Greenwich Students
Calling All Students to Explore Founding History as America Marks Its 250th Anniversary
As our nation marks 250 years of American independence, the Putnam Hill Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) invites all Greenwich students in grades 5 through 12 to bring history to life in the 2026–2027 American History and Patriots of the American Revolution Essay Contests.
This year’s national contest tracks invite students to engage deeply with our nation’s founding:
Grades 5–8 Track:An American history essay exploring the local and emotional impact of the "Announcement of the Declaration of Independence First Public Reading".

Grades 9–12 Track:A biographical and historical study focusing on figures of the Revolutionary era (1773–1783).
Youth Video Contest (Grades 5–12): Students who prefer visual media can enter by producing an original, up to 3-minute video exploring these same revolutionary topics, either individually or in pairs.

The contest is open to all students residing in or attending school in Greenwich, including public, private, parochial, and home-school programs. Educators are encouraged to offer extra credit for participation to inspire student entries.
Submission Deadline & Awards:
Winning entries at the chapter level receive Bronze Medals, certificates, and advance to state, divisional, and national levels for monetary prizes and recognition.
Entries must be submitted to the local chapter by November 1, 2026. Chapter-level winners will receive Bronze Medals and official certificates.
