Update Expected On Paused School Zone Speed Camera Program In Greenwich

GREENWICH, CT — An update on the town's school zone speed camera program is expected to be a focal point of the Board of Selectmen meeting this week, as officials continue to navigate a pause in enforcement tied to procedural obligations and complaints from the public.

The Board of Selectmen meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 23, at 10:30 a.m. at Greenwich Town Hall, 101 Field Point Road, and will be held in a hybrid format with both in-person attendance and a Zoom webinar option.

Sgt. James Smith of the Greenwich Police Department is scheduled to present an update on the school zone speed camera program, which was rolled out in school zones last fall but was halted earlier this month.

Town officials have said the cameras are expected to return, noting that early data showed reduced speeding in monitored areas.

The item is listed under new business for discussion at the board's Thursday meeting.

Also under new business, the board is scheduled to consider a request for approval of the Safe Streets Greenwich Safety Action Plan.

The plan, developed with support from a federal grant and local task force, outlines strategies aimed at reducing traffic-related injuries and fatalities and improving safety across all modes of travel.

The agenda also includes a presentation of a report from the town's Sustainability Committee, led by Selectwoman Lauren Rabin and environmental officials.

Under old business, the board is scheduled to take up several items for possible action, including a municipal improvement referral related to leasing office space at the Cohen Eastern Greenwich Civic Center to the Old Greenwich-Riverside Community Center.

The board is also expected to consider a request for a temporary road closure on Veterans Way for a Memorial Day event, review an ADA grievance, and consider a request to raise a flag in observance of U.S. Merchant Marines Day.

The meeting will include updates from First Selectman Fred Camillo and the selectwomen, along with approval of minutes from prior meetings.
