'Big' Rats Take Over Apartment Complex In New Haven: Report

One resident said, "I killed a big rat with a broom. I was so mad," according to a report.

NEW HAVEN, CT — Some Kensington Square apartment residents say they are dealing with a major rat problem, with some the size of 12 to 18 inches, according to a WTNH News 8 report.

Some residents told News 8 they have children and are worried for their safety. They also say the rats are destroying their possessions and causing damage to their apartments.

Community Builders, the nonprofit owner and manager of Kensington Square Apartments, told News 8 that they have temporarily relocated six families due to the rodent issues.

The company said it is trapping the rats and covering up all holes.

Additionally, families will be allowed to stay at a hotel at no cost while work continues, and residents will receive a monetary stipend, News 8 reports.

Mayor Justin Elicker told Fox 61 that the city has received three complaints about rats and inspected the units three times. He said, "Having a rat infestation is totally unacceptable...," while adding that the residents' safety must be the most important issue.

Kensington Square Apartments is located at 392 Orchard St. in New Haven. According to its website, the apartments are located minutes from downtown and are "the ideal community to call home, located in a prime location." Apartments include one, two, three, and four bedrooms.
