Arrest Made In Kidnapping That Prompted Amber Alert: New Haven Police (patch.com) — New Haven police say they've arrested a man accused of abducting a 5-year-old boy from a city bus stop, a case that triggered a statewide Amber Alert. Officers negotiated with the suspect for hours before the child was safely handed to a tow truck driver in Bridgeport, and the man was later captured at a Branford hotel. Authorities emphasize that the child is safe and credit New Haven detectives with defusing a highly dangerous situation.
   

2. Lamont Sends $45K To New Haven DTC (newhavenindependent.org) — New Haven's Democratic Town Committee received over $45,000 from Gov. Ned Lamont's reelection campaign to reimburse a month of paid, citywide canvassing before the Aug. 11 primary. Local party leaders describe hiring 43 canvassers at above-minimum wages, printing New Haven-specific literature, and focusing heavily on turning out city voters where challenger Josh Elliott performed relatively strongly.
   

3. After 118 years, New Haven hat shop closed for now as family works out future (nhregister.com) — Downtown New Haven's 118-year-old DelMonico Hatter has suddenly closed its Elm Street storefront, but family members and relatives say the shutdown may be temporary while they sort out the shop's future. Conflicting "permanently" and "temporarily" closed signs, a paused website, and talk of a possible sale or new operator leave loyal New Haven customers waiting for clarity.
   

4. CT man gets 30 years in prison for fatal drive-by shooting in New Haven in 2023 (courant.com) — A New Haven man has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for a 2023 drive-by shooting that killed 29-year-old Shaquille Chazz Pearson near East Pearl Street and Grand Avenue. Prosecutors say shots were fired from a stolen SUV later found in North Haven. The plea deal reduced initial murder and weapons charges in exchange for manslaughter with a firearm.
   

5. Cyclists ride in New Haven to support cancer research (wtnh.com) — Thousands of riders filled the streets around the Yale Bowl in New Haven for the 16th annual Closer to Free Ride, raising money for Smilow Cancer Hospital and Yale Cancer Center. Cancer survivors, families, and medical staff rode routes from 10 to 100 miles, then gathered for music, food, and a celebratory atmosphere that included saluting patients outside Smilow.
