Don't Use Fire To Battle Hornets, Weeds: Southington FD

SOUTHINGTON, CT — Not only does the local fire department want folks to refrain from fighting fire with fire, but they don't want people to fight hornets with fire or weeds with fire.

Wednesday, the Southington Fire Department issued a warning to residents about using torches to eliminate weeds or hornet nests after seeing what it described as a recent increase in structure fires caused by the practice.

Fire officials urged homeowners to use professionals rather than torches when dealing with weeds or nests around their properties.

The department also cautioned residents not to delay calling 911 if they see smoke or fire.

"Call the professionals, and always call 911 if you see smoke or fire. Don’t wait," the department said in its warning.

Officials said a homeowner involved in a recent incident was "extremely lucky."

The warning comes as the department emphasizes the risk of fires spreading to homes or other structures when open-flame devices are used near residential properties.
