Vernon Police Confiscate Homemade Cannon Found In Vehicle At Traffic Stop

VERNON, CT — A homemade cannon was discovered in a vehicle after a traffic stop in Vernon during what Vernon police termed an "unusual weapon seizure."

According to an incident report, at 6:25 p.m. on May 21,Officer Tyler Wallace observed a vehicle operating erratically and committing several moving violations on West Main Street.

A motor vehicle stop was conducted.

According to an incident report, Wallace, a certified Drug Recognition Expert, observed multiple signs of impairment from the operator and discovered drug paraphernalia and suspected narcotics were also observed inside the vehicle.

Standardized Field Sobriety Tests were administered, which the operator did not perform to standard, according to an incident report.

The operator, identified as 56-year-old Vernon resident Benton Grenier, was subsequently placed under arrest, police said.

During a search of the vehicle, officers located a homemade cannon inside the trunk.

Grenier was charged with DUI, narcotics offenses, and multiple motor vehicle violations, according to an incident report.
