Grand Opening Of Eco Park Announced In West Haven

WEST HAVEN, CT — (From City of West Haven): The city and the Land Trust of West Haven are proud to announce the grand opening of Eco Park, a new coastal environmental space designed to restore native habitat and provide environmental education opportunities for the community.

The public is invited to attend a grand opening celebration from 6-7 p.m. June 11 on the West Haven shoreline at Old Grove Park, 1 Palace St.

The event will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony, remarks from the city and the Land Trust, refreshments, music, and family-friendly activities.

Mayor Dorinda Borer highlighted the importance of the project as a reflection of the city’s commitment to both environmental stewardship and community investment.

“Eco Park is a meaningful addition to our shoreline and a testament to what can be accomplished through strong community partnerships,” Borer said. “Working together with the Land Trust of West Haven, we are creating a space that not only enhances the beauty of our coast but also protects it and makes it accessible for residents to learn from and enjoy.”

Eco Park features carefully selected native coastal plants that support pollinators, improve shoreline resilience and contribute to the long-term health of the local ecosystem.

Eco Park project co-leaders Marilyn Wilkes, the president of the Land Trust, and Mark E. Paine Jr., the director of the city Department of Parks and Recreation, emphasized the thoughtful design and community value of the project.

“Every element of Eco Park was chosen with intention,” Paine said. “The plants were carefully selected to meet environmental criteria while creating a space that is welcoming and visually engaging. This is not just landscaping — it’s restoration, education and an investment in the future of West Haven. Eco Park is a place where people can connect with nature, learn about our coastal environment and take pride in what our community has created together.”

After the ceremony, attendees are encouraged to explore Eco Park, visit the interpretive signs and participate in the interactive activities.

Eco Park reflects a shared vision between the city and the Land Trust to protect natural resources, expand environmental education and create meaningful public spaces for future generations.
