Award-Winning Documentary UNBROKEN Comes to Capitol Hill for Special Congressional Screening

Lawmakers, filmmakers, & Shen Yun artists come together on July 22 for a screening and discussion exploring artistic freedom and more

An award-winning documentary examining artistic freedom, cultural preservation, and allegations of transnational repression will take center stage on Capitol Hill tomorrow as UNBROKEN: The Untold Story of Shen Yun receives a special congressional screening.

Held on July 22, the evening will bring together members of Congress, filmmakers, and Shen Yun Performing Arts artists for a reception, film screening, and live panel discussion focused on the experiences documented in the film. The event begins with a reception at 6:00 p.m., followed by the screening and discussion at 7:00 p.m.

Produced by Sincere Pictures, UNBROKEN blends investigative journalism with intimate storytelling, following Shen Yun performers whose dedication to preserving classical Chinese dance unfolds alongside an investigation into an alleged campaign of intimidation directed at the company. Rather than presenting a traditional performing arts documentary, the film explores the intersection of culture, freedom of expression, and national security through documented evidence and firsthand accounts.

The documentary arrives as concerns surrounding transnational repression and foreign influence continue to receive increased attention in Washington. Through interviews, court documents, medical records, and other evidence presented throughout the film, UNBROKEN invites audiences to examine the material for themselves while highlighting the personal stories of the artists whose lives have been shaped by these events.

Steve Lance, Executive Producer of Sincere Pictures and Investigative Journalist with NTD Television, says bringing the documentary to Capitol Hill is a natural next step after years spent investigating the story.

"I've spent years covering Capitol Hill as a journalist, and on July 22 we're bringing this story to the people with the power to act on it. What we documented in UNBROKEN didn't happen somewhere far away, one of the bomb threats forced an evacuation at the Kennedy Center, right here in Washington. This is a film about a foreign government's campaign against American artists on American soil, and there's no more fitting place to screen it than the U.S. Capitol. Everyone who attends will see the evidence for themselves and can come to their own conclusions."

While the investigative findings form the backbone of the documentary, UNBROKEN is equally a story about the artists themselves. The film follows performers who committed years to mastering classical Chinese dance and music, tracing their journeys from ordinary American childhoods to stages around the world. Their stories offer a deeply personal perspective on the role of artistic expression in preserving culture and identity while navigating challenges beyond the theater.

Following the screening, attendees will hear directly from members of the filmmaking team and Shen Yun artists during a panel discussion about their firsthand experiences with artistic freedom and transnational repression. The conversation will provide an opportunity for lawmakers, policymakers, and guests to engage with those whose stories appear on screen.

As debates surrounding free expression and foreign influence continue to evolve, UNBROKEN positions itself not simply as a documentary about one performing arts company, but as an exploration of broader questions surrounding culture, democracy, and the ability of artists to perform without intimidation.

Tomorrow's Capitol Hill screening marks one of the film's most significant public presentations to date, placing its investigation before an audience uniquely positioned to consider the issues it raises. Through a combination of investigative reporting and deeply personal storytelling, UNBROKEN encourages viewers to examine the evidence, hear directly from those involved, and draw their own conclusions.
