New York Circus Project Presents Grimms’ Fairy Tales: Cinderella and Hansel & Gretel at Woolly Mammoth Theatr

New York Circus Project returns to Washington, DC with the world premiere of Grimms’ Fairy Tales: Cinderella and Hansel & Gretel, a new double bill of contemporary circus works directed by Sam Landa. Presented at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company as part of We the Woolly: Remixing 250, this free presentation reimagines two familiar fairy tales through acrobatics, aerial performance, dance, and physical theatre.

Conceived in the tradition of an evening of story ballets and theatrical fables, Cinderella and Hansel & Gretel use the physical language of dance and circus to bring classic stories to life for audiences of all ages. Together, these two new works invite audiences to encounter familiar tales not as relics of childhood, but as dynamic stories about power, family, desire, fear, survival, and growing up.

This world premiere continues New York Circus Project’s development of Grimms’ Fairy Tales following the premiere of Rapunzel at The Egg in Albany, NY. The production features direction by Sam Landa (Moulin Rouge! On Broadway, Disney Theatrical’s The Greatest Showman and Beauty and the Beast, The 7 Fingers), choreography by Raul Contreras (Sunset Boulevard, Moulin Rouge! On Broadway, Kiss of the Spider Woman film with Jennifer Lopez, Ballet Hispánico), and co-lighting and production design by Jasmine Lesane and Nate Files (4x Primetime Emmy Award Nominees, F1 Las Vegas Grand Prix, MTV VMAs, American Idol, Dancing with the Stars).
