Washington, DC — April 14, 2026 — As communities across the globe observe World Health Day, a local initiative in the nation’s capital is bringing the focus to one of the most urgent public health challenges facing the District: drug abuse and overdose.

The Foundation for a Drug-Free World will host a World Health Day Open House at the Founding Church of Scientology of Washington, DC, offering residents, educators and community leaders a closer look at practical solutions aimed at prevention, education and community action.

At a time when Washington, DC continues to confront the effects of opioid addiction and rising overdose rates, the event is designed not only to examine the scope of the problem—but to highlight what can be done about it.

A Focus on Practical Solutions

Rather than approaching the issue solely from a policy standpoint, the Open House emphasizes tools and strategies that individuals and communities can use immediately.

Attendees will have the opportunity to explore multimedia exhibits at the Church’s Public Information Center, showcasing initiatives that address drug abuse, human rights and community well-being. The program will also feature presentations from professionals working in prevention and outreach, with insights into fentanyl, opioid addiction and the impact on youth.

A live demonstration of overdose response—including the use of Narcan—will provide attendees with practical, potentially life-saving knowledge increasingly relevant in communities across the District.

Education as Prevention

Central to the event is the educational initiative of the Foundation for a Drug-Free World, which provides fact-based materials such as the “Truth About Drugs” campaign. These resources are used internationally by educators, community groups and prevention specialists to raise awareness about the effects of drugs and to equip individuals—particularly young people—with information to make informed decisions.

Organizers emphasize that prevention begins with understanding.

“Addressing the drug crisis requires more than awareness—it requires action at the community level,” said Smith, a representative of the Foundation. “This event is about giving people tools they can use right away to make a difference.”

Bringing the Community Together

In addition to presentations and demonstrations, the Open House is designed to foster dialogue among those working to improve health outcomes across Washington, DC. Attendees will include educators, community advocates and local leaders engaged in prevention and outreach efforts.

The event follows a structured program:

  • 11:30 AM — Self-guided tour of exhibits
  • 12:00 PM — Complimentary lunch
  • 12:10 PM — Open House presentation
  • 1:10 PM — Networking and community dialogue

By combining education, practical training and community engagement, the World Health Day Open House aims to contribute to a broader movement focused on prevention—an approach organizers say is essential to reversing current trends.

A Local Effort with Global Context

Observed annually, World Health Day highlights pressing health issues affecting populations worldwide. In Washington, DC, the focus on drug abuse reflects a growing recognition that local action plays a critical role in addressing global challenges.

For those attending, the event offers not just information—but an opportunity to become part of the solution.
