📰 News we're reading

1. Nashville-Based Upscale Restaurant Chain Coming To UTC Area (patch.com) — Sarasota food lovers can look forward to a new BrickTop's restaurant opening at University Town Center, bringing the Nashville-based upscale American bistro to 55 N. Cattlemen Road. While the company's website targets a spring debut, project managers now expect a mid-to-late summer 2027 opening, expanding the chain's growing Florida footprint.

2. Drowning Near Lido Beach Under Investigation: Sarasota Police (patch.com) — Sarasota police are investigating a man's drowning near Lido Key after bystanders pulled him from the water along the 400 block of Benjamin Franklin Drive Monday evening. Sarasota County Emergency Services pronounced him dead at the scene, and detectives currently say they do not suspect foul play in the incident.

3. Sarasota County Correctional Facility Earns National Accreditation for Mental Health Services (srqmagazine.com) — Sarasota County's jail has earned national accreditation for its mental health services, signaling that care for people in custody meets rigorous, nationally recognized standards. The recognition from the National Commission on Correctional Health Care reflects coordinated improvements in staff training, clinical practices, and operations. For residents, it means local correctional health care is being independently reviewed and held to higher quality benchmarks.

4. Sarasota County's potential Amendment 3 impact exceeds $87 million (yourobserver.com) — Sarasota County officials warn that statewide passage of Florida's Amendment 3 could cut more than $87 million a year from county property tax revenues once a higher homestead exemption fully phases in. That would mean about $1,000 in annual tax savings for a $350,000 home, but could force tough choices on funding for services like the Sheriff's Office, EMS, and Legacy Trail debt. Two public budget hearings are set for Sept. 9 and 23.

5. Sarasota open house on parking issues leaves residents frustrated (mysuncoast.com) — Residents packed Sarasota City Hall for an open house on downtown parking, only to find they could submit written questions but not speak, prompting many to walk out in frustration. The city has temporarily rolled back extended parking hours and higher fines while it searches for a long-term funding solution. Current enforcement hours for street parking, garages, and free time-restricted spots remain in effect, with increased citation amounts still applying.
