Savannah council backs rezoning for new townhomes on south side (savannahnow.com) — Savannah City Council has approved rezoning on Mohawk Street to allow six new townhomes on the south side, despite organized neighborhood opposition over height, character, and flooding. Supporters argued the project, planned at affordable HUD rates and potentially backed by the Savannah Affordable Housing Fund, is a needed step toward easing the city's housing shortage and homelessness concerns.
   

2. Georgia Ports generate $181B in economic impact annually (poultrytimes.com) — Savannah's port is driving a huge share of Georgia's economy, supporting more than 600,000 jobs and $181 billion in annual sales statewide, according to a new UGA study. ATF K-9 shows Savannah students suspicious package safety (wjcl.com) — Students at Savannah's Royce School, the city's only campus built exclusively for neurodiverse learners, recently watched an ATF agent and his explosives-detection dog demonstrate how to spot suspicious packages. The hands-on lesson in Highland Park aimed to teach kids when something seems wrong, how K-9 teams work, and why it's important to alert a trusted adult immediately.
   

4. Savannah disability advocate urges Georgia lawmakers to protect voting access as state weighs new election system (wtoc.com) — A Savannah disability advocate is urging Georgia lawmakers to keep ballot-marking devices available as the state considers moving to hand-marked paper ballots for 2028. Speaking to a special legislative committee, she warned that handwriting requirements could disenfranchise many disabled voters and argued that accessible machines are essential for independent, private voting across Savannah and the rest of Georgia.
   

5. Jesup sex crimes case pleaded down; Prosecutor speaks, local attorney breaks down plea (wtoc.com) — A plea deal in a Jesup child cruelty case is drawing scrutiny, and a Savannah attorney is weighing in on why sex-offender registration was not included. The victim's family questions the outcome, while prosecutors say evidentiary challenges about when the sexual contact occurred led them to negotiate probation, a short jail term, and a ban from Wayne County instead.
