1. Coastal Middle recognized as School of Distinction for second time (wtoc.com) — Coastal Middle School in Savannah has been honored as a 2026 School of Distinction, earning the national recognition for the second time in four years. Evaluators praised the school's inclusive, student-centered culture and strong instruction, and Coastal staff will share their practices at a national middle-grades conference. Families can take pride in a local campus being held up as a model.
   

2. Savannah police arrest teen in August shooting (savannahnow.com) — Savannah Police have arrested 17-year-old Demetric Hamilton in connection with an Aug. 18 shooting that wounded a male juvenile on East 71st Street. The victim was taken to Memorial Health with non-life-threatening injuries, and Hamilton now faces aggravated assault and firearm charges. Investigators are still gathering information and are asking residents to share tips via CrimeStoppers or the SPD app.
   

3. SCCPSS High Schools Rising in U.S. News & World Report Rankings Released this Week (savannahherald.com) — Savannah-Chatham public high schools just climbed in the new U.S. News & World Report rankings, with Savannah Arts Academy named the top public high school in the Savannah area and 10th in Georgia. Savannah Early College, Woodville-Tompkins, and Islands High also posted strong gains, all boasting high graduation rates and placing in the top tiers statewide and nationally.
   

4. 4 former Savannah police employees arrested for misusing Flock cameras (fox5atlanta.com) — Four former Savannah Police Department employees have been arrested after an internal audit found they allegedly misused the city's Flock license plate reader system for non-law-enforcement purposes. The GBI is investigating, and the case will go to local prosecutors, while Savannah's police chief and mayor both stressed that public trust and accountability are paramount. Residents with information are urged to contact GBI investigators.
   

5. Savannah welcomes 40 students from around the world (wtoc.com) — Forty college students from 20 countries are in historic downtown Savannah this weekend kicking off a year of study and life in Georgia through the Georgia Rotary Student Program. They met host families, Rotarian sponsors, and Mayor Van Johnson, and will showcase their cultures in a cabaret before returning in October for another Savannah-based GRSP weekend.
