Valdosta to host back-to-school block party at Unity Park (walb.com) — Valdosta families can mark their calendars for the City’s free Back to School Community Block Party on Saturday, Aug. 1, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Unity Park downtown. Students can pick up school supplies, enjoy food, music, and activities, and even get free haircuts at the City Hall Annex as local partners rally support for a strong start to the school year.

Elsie Napier wins GA House District 177 runoff election to represent Lowndes County (wtxl.com) — Lowndes County voters have chosen Elsie Napier to represent Georgia House District 177, defeating former Valdosta City Councilman Alvin Payton Jr. with nearly 59% of the vote. Turnout was unusually strong for a runoff, and Napier, a newcomer to elected office with a background in public health and ministry, will head to Atlanta when the next legislative term begins.

3. Beverly Smith to Deliver Keynote Address at NCNW Community Event (valdostaceo.com) — Valdosta residents are invited to the NCNW Valdosta-Lowndes Metro Section’s 12th Annual Bethune Leadership Recognition Banquet on November 7 at Valdosta State University’s Student Union Ballroom. The black-tie event will feature keynote speaker Beverly E. Smith and support NCNW’s work in education, health equity, economic empowerment, and social justice across South Georgia, with tickets, nominations, and sponsorships available now.

4. Florida State in great position to land key RB target (usatoday.com) — A standout Valdosta High School running back, Marquis Fennell, is drawing serious attention from Florida State as he nears his June 25 college decision. After a huge junior season with nearly 1,500 rushing yards and 33 total touchdowns, the Valdosta native has visited FSU three times and is considered a strong candidate to join their 2027 recruiting class.
