Mark was a 1969 graduate of Joliet Catholic High School, where he participated in wrestling and played both alto saxophone and clarinet in the school band. He also went on to graduate with honors from Lewis University in 1978 with a degree in political science.
A proud veteran of the United States Army, Mark served his country from 1971 to 1973 during the Vietnam War. He completed basic training at Fort Lewis, Washington, followed by Advanced Individual Training at Fort Rucker, Alabama. He was later stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where he served as an OH-58 helicopter repairman. His military service was a source of great pride throughout his life, and he was honored to receive the National Defense Service Medal and Marksman designation with the M-16. He would later continue his service for an additional four years in the U.S. Army Reserve. He was especially honored to participate in Honor Flight Chicago #127 for military veterans, which gave him the opportunity to visit Washington, D.C., and see the nation’s monuments—a lifelong dream he was grateful to fulfill.

Mark built a distinguished 45 year career at the Citgo Oil Refinery in Lemont, Illinois, and the BP Oil Refinery in Hammond, Indiana, where he was respected for his expertise as an operator and leader. His deep knowledge, steady leadership, and commitment to excellence earned the respect of those he worked alongside and reflected the strong work ethic that defined his life. Despite long work weeks, often 60 to 70 hours, Mark never hesitated to give his time and energy to those he loved. He was a selfless and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, always coaching a team, hosting unforgettable pool parties, or simply showing up when it mattered most.
Mark also gave generously to his community. He served for many years as an usher and night deacon at First Presbyterian Church. He was also deeply involved with the Italian American Cultural Society in Joliet, where he served as Vice President and spent countless hours in the kitchen helping prepare hundreds of gallons of sauce for their monthly spaghetti dinners. Mark was a dedicated member of the Troy District 30-C School Board for 30 years, including eight years as President. His leadership helped guide a period of significant growth for the district, including the construction of two new elementary schools and a new middle school.
In his free time, Mark found joy in fishing, spending time with his grandchildren, and trying his luck at scratch off lottery tickets or the casino, especially enjoying a good high roller slot machine. He looked forward to family traditions like Easter smokies, coloring eggs, potica, and his favorite oatmeal cream pies. A lifelong sports fan, he enjoyed cheering on both the Cubs and the White Sox and watching Notre Dame Football.
Mark is survived by his devoted wife of 49 years, Maureen Fumagalli (née Kirkpatrick), to whom he was a selfless and caring husband, always putting her first and looking out for her with unwavering love and dedication. He is also survived by his two beloved sons, Matthew (Mina) and Michael (Tiffany), and his seven cherished grandchildren - Gable, Jameson, Eliana, Ella, Luca, Maverick, and Tyler - who brought him immense pride and joy. Mark is further survived by his six siblings, Margaret Craven (Bob), Marilyn Fumagalli, Sue Catalano (the late Robert), Anne Marie Nelson (David), Louis Fumagalli (Kathy) and Helen Begeske (Jim), along with many nieces and nephews who will miss him dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter-in-law, Kirsten Fumagalli.
Mark will be remembered for his generosity, humor, and the quiet strength with which he lived his life. His greatest pride was his family, and his greatest legacy is the love and values he instilled in them.
