DOWNERS GROVE, IL — Veterans Day is coming up on Wednesday, Nov. 11, with several opportunities around Downers to honor those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, both in times of war and peace.

Originally called Armistice Day, Veterans Day is always observed on Nov. 11 to reflect the signing of the armistice ending World War I at 11 a.m. on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. The observance was changed to Veterans Day in 1954 to include veterans who served in World War II and the Korean War.

Veterans Day Pancake Breakfast

Synapse House Clubhouse,

Nov. 11 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Synapse House will host its first free Veterans Day Pancake Breakfast this year. Visitors can stop in between 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. to enjoy a pancake breakfast. The nonprofit, which helps people who have had brain injuries, strokes or other neurological conditions, is also asking for donations of cleaning supplies, copy paper and toilet paper during the event. Veterans Day Open House

West Suburban Humane Society , 1901 Ogden Ave., Downers Grove

Nov. 11 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

A Veterans Day Open House will be held at West Suburban Humane Society. Veterans are invited to stop in anytime between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Veterans Day to enjoy free coffee and donuts.

Honoring Our Heroes: A Veterans Day Popup Exhibit

Lincoln Center, 935 Maple Ave., Downers Grove

Nov. 11 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Honoring Our Heroes popup exhibit will pay tribute to Downers Grove veterans. The exhibit shares information and memorabilia related to the village's military history and its prominent veterans. Woodridge Village Hall

Nov. 5 from 6 p.m. to 6:45 p.m.

The village of Woodridge will host a reception on Nov. 5 to pay tribute to VFW Memorial Post 1578 and Vietnam War Veteran Bob Reichert.
