Village, Park District To Present Stormwater Detention Improvements For Hummer Park
The Village of Downers Grove and the park district aim to prevent flood waters from getting onto Fairview Avenue from Hummer Park.
DOWNERS GROVE, IL — The Village of Downers Grove and the Downers Grove Park District have planned a public meeting to discuss plans to improve stormwater detention at Hummer Park. The meeting, tentatively planned for the evening of Oct. 12, will give residents a chance to learn about design plans and share feedback.
Per a park district memorandum, the village asked the park district in 2024 to "consider allowing stormwater detention improvements at Hummer Park." The aim of the improvements would be to prevent flood water from getting onto Fairview Avenue near the park.
The project would be funded by the village and village staff would handle bidding, park district memorandum said.

A meeting was held in August, during which members of the village and park district boards discussed plans for retention with an engineering consultant. With the proposed retention method, "areas adjacent to the creek will be lowered to allow detention, where water will 'back up' and pond after storms," the memorandum said.
It's estimated it would take a few days for water to drain from where it pooled.

The plans also call for native landscaping and turf grass in the surrounding area.
Board members reviewed concept drawings and discussed plans during a Sept. 17 park district meeting,
Following the Oct. 12 public meeting, native landscaping will begin, followed by an intergovernmental agreement between village and park district for the project that's projected to be finalized before the end of the year.
The Hummer Park storm water detention improvement project is among the items on the Village of Downers Grove budget for 2027.
