Coroner IDs Lake County Boy, 15, Who Drowned In Pistakee Lake

Brian Monzanga was boating with friends when he went underwater Monday evening and did not resurface, police said.

LAKE COUNTY, IL — A 15-year-old Round Lake boy died Monday evening after disappearing beneath the water while swimming in Pistakee Lake, authorities said.

Emergency crews were dispatched at about 6 p.m. Monday to Myers Bay, which is part of Pistakee Lake, after reports that the teen had either jumped from a boat to swim or accidentally fallen into the water.

The boy was not wearing a flotation device, Lake County Sheriff's Office Chief Christopher Covelli told Patch.

"When he didn’t resurface, his friends jumped in and tried to find him," Covelli said. "Unfortunately, they were unable to."

After more than two hours of searching, dive teams and an underwater drone located the teen at about 7:50 p.m. He was recovered from the lake and pronounced dead at the scene, according to authorities.

On Tuesday, the Lake County Coroner's Office identified the teen as Brayan Monzanga, 15, of Round Lake.

An autopsy conducted Tuesday determined Brian's death was consistent with drowning, according to the coroner's office.

The incident remains under investigation by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Conservation Police and the Lake County Coroner's Office.
