8th Floor Shooter On Western Avenue Captured By Joliet Police, This Is What Led To His Arrest: English

JOLIET, IL — For the first time this month, there has been a shooting in Joliet, it's a non-fatal shooting, and Antonio Sims, the 35-year-old person deemed responsible for causing the bloodshed, has been captured and booked into Will County's Jail, Joliet police announced in their Labor Day press release.

According to police spokesman Dwayne English, at 8:53 a.m. on Sunday, officers responded to an apartment building at 373 Western Avenue for a gunshot victim.

He said the officers located a 53-year-old man on the first floor of the building who sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Officers immediately rendered medical assistance
until Joliet Fire Department paramedics arrived.

"Preliminary information indicates that the victim
had been shot on the eighth floor before seeking help from another tenant," English announced.

The victim was rushed to St. Joseph's Medical Center by the Joliet Fire Department ambulance. He was listed in critical, but stable condition.

"During the investigation, officers learned that the shooting had reportedly occurred on the eighth floor. Upon reaching that floor, officers located Antonio Sims, 35, Joliet, with a laceration to his left hand. Sims was identified as a suspect and taken into custody. He was transported to Silver Cross Hospital by the Joliet Fire Department for treatment of his injury that is believed to have occurred during this incident," English pointed out.

He said that Sims and the victim were known to each other and that the shooting may have occurred during a struggle between the two men. Other circumstances leading
to the shooting remain under investigation.

During the search of Sims' apartment unit, detectives recovered a loaded 9mm handgun that had previously been reported stolen from Aurora, along with suspected cocaine, English pointed out.

The Will County State’s Attorney’s Office approved charges of armed violence, unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, possession of a stolen firearm, aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a controlled substance, and No Firearms Owner Identification Card.

Sims is now in the Will County Adult Detention Facility.
