Joliet Cops Seek Info On Walmart Toy Aisle Fire As Store Partially Reopens

SHOREWOOD, IL — The cause of the fire that started June 25 in Walmart's toy department has yet to be determined, Joliet police said.

Officers, along with Joliet Fire Department personnel, were called at 11:13 a.m. to the supermarket at 1401 S. Route 59 in the Shorewood area for a report of a fire in the rear of the store. First responders encountered heavy smoke and an activated sprinkler system, according to a news release.

While the cause of the fire remains under investigation, police said preliminary information indicates the fire originated in the toy department. The Illinois State Fire Marshal's Office is assisting with the investigation.

"Surveillance footage from the store is being reviewed as part of this ongoing investigation," Joliet police wrote in a news release.

Walmart partially reopened for business Wednesday after temporarily shutting down following the fire. Although not all departments are open, staff said a limited number of grocery and pharmacy items are available. The vision center and pharmacy drive-thru are operating.
