For one afternoon, Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center brings together leading voices in literature, journalism, global affairs, civic life, and Holocaust memory for a landmark symposium on freedom, democracy, and America’s future.
Featured voices include Isabel Wilkerson, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Warmth of Other Suns and Caste; Jelani Cobb, dean of Columbia Journalism School and staff writer at The New Yorker; Leslie Vinjamuri, Ph.D., president and CEO of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs; Verneé Green, CEO of Mikva Challenge; Maria Hinojosa, award-winning journalist and founder of Futuro Media; and Elisha Wiesel, chairman of The Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity and Son of Nobel Laureate, Elie Wiesel.
In January 1941, as Germany occupied much of Europe and the United States stood at the edge of war, President Franklin D. Roosevelt named four freedoms he believed could define a more humane world: freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear. Eighty-five years later, inside a museum built on the evidence of what happens when freedom collapses, those ideals return not as settled promises but as living responsibilities. What does freedom require now?
The symposium opens with Wilkerson, whose keynote examines dignity, hierarchy, and the forces that determine who has been protected by freedom, who has been denied it, and why. Cobb, Vinjamuri, and Green then join Museum CEO Bernard Cherkasov for a national panel on the free press, global accountability, civic participation, and the institutions democratic life cannot survive without. The afternoon closes with Hinojosa and Wiesel, in conversation with Kelley Szany, Senior Vice President of Education and Exhibitions, on Holocaust memory, inherited responsibility, and what it means to act on what history has taught us. The symposium’s themes extend into a special installation.
Word & Vision: Roosevelt, Rockwell, and the Four Freedoms Address On view in the Lillian & Larry Goodman Auditorium & Gallery (Please note that additional Museum exhibits will be inaccessible during this program.) October 21 – December 4, 2026 The text that defined a generation meets the imagery that mobilized a nation. This featured 2026 Symposium installation pairs a preserved original of FDR’s Four Freedoms speech with Norman Rockwell’s iconic 1943 posters – translating Roosevelt’s ideals into images that reached every American home. On loan from anonymous client of Seth Kaller, Inc.
A reception will precede the event, starting at 2:30 PM.
Registration required
Non-Member/Member: $10.00/session

For over a decade, the Morton Grove Farmers' Market was a popular event that brought the community together outdoors from late spring through early fall and also held indoor markets for the holidays which welcomed attendees for free. We are continuing that tradition with our twice yearly "Market Faire" this Fall on October 24 presented by the Morton Grove Chamber of Commerce - https://mgcci.org/ - with the support of the Morton Grove Park District.
Rich Block, President of the Morton Grove Chamber was also managed the Farmers' Market who wanted to bring back an indoor event for the holidays for the residents of the village and surrounding communities to enjoy. The spirit of those markets continues as a place where people come together to meet, eat and enjoy entertainment while shopping for items from local artisans and crafters, visit with service providers and get information from the village and local organizations.
The first event was titled as a "holiday faire" attracting shoppers interested in seeing vendors who provided all that was needed for the holidays (gifts, catering, music, photographers, decorations, party rentals and more). That concept transitioned to an artisan crafts fair as others wanted to share their goods and services who offered gourmet foods, home repair services and more from home based businesses. We quickly outgrew our original locations and found a new home at the Morton Grove Park District's Prairie View Community Center on their first floor main gym that now allows us to have expanded the amount of vendor tables with easier access.
The Chamber's goal is to grow these Market Faires (this fall on October 24th from 9 am to 2 pm). Next Spring Market Faire will be May 8 close to Mother's Day in 2027. We are growing into a twice yearly, popular event for all to find interesting items, services and information while meeting their neighbors. We hope you will join us and share the event with your family, friends, neighbors, co-workers and anyone interested. Please help us spread the word so we can more people to attend the market. For more about the Morton Grove Chamber or our twice-yearly Market Faire please contact us at 847-965-0330 or by email at: Director@mgcci.org THANKS...we hope to see YOU at the Faire!

What happens when a family decides to hold a séance for Jerry Garcia on the anniversary of his death? Waiting for Jerry Garcia — a new play by Dan Zellner, directed by Steven Yandell — is about to find out.
Three family members, played by Becca Blatt, Drew Mierzejewski and Tyler Skaafgard, gather around a séance table, each carrying their own hopes, regrets, and unfinished business. What follows is funny, tender, and surprisingly moving — a comedy about life choices, failed dreams, and what it means to love someone you never knew.
The evening doesn't stop there. A live acoustic Grateful Dead jam session and community sing-along follows the performance, led by musician Jim Cullom and featuring The Uke Jammers with Mitch Thomas. Bring your acoustic instrument. Bring your voice. Just show up.
October 24th & 25th | The Storefront, 4051 Main Street, Skokie IL
