Skokie Among 24 Illinois Grant Recipients In ComEd Clean Energy Program

SKOKIE, IL — Skokie is among 24 local governments, public agencies and nonprofit organizations across Illinois set to receive funding through the 2026 Powering Safe Communities Program, according to an announcement from ComEd.

The Skokie Police Department will use its grant to acquire a mobile light tower/generator to support public safety operations during emergencies and power outages. ComEd and the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus said the 2026 program will provide more than $170,000 in total funding to recipients statewide.

For the last 12 years, the grant program has supported projects aimed at improving public safety and advancing clean energy solutions in communities across northern Illinois. Since its launch in 2015, the Powering Safe Communities Program has awarded more than $2 million in grant funding for more than 260 public safety and clean energy projects.

ComEd said it partners with the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus, a council of Chicagoland’s chief elected officials, to administer the program. To be eligible, recipients must match the grant funds with an investment of equal or greater value for their project.

Neil James, executive director of the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus, said the grants are producing local results.

ComEd also works with Openlands on the Green Region Grant Program, one of its four Power for Good grant programs, alongside Powering Safe Communities, Powering the Arts and Powering the Holidays.
