📰 News we're reading

• Western Springs Main Breaks Surge Lately (patch.com) — Western Springs residents are seeing a spike in water main breaks, with eight reported in the last three weeks and 40 so far this year. Village officials link the problem to extreme temperatures, aging pipes, and limited revenue options, while highlighting ongoing water line replacement projects on Woodland Avenue, Garden Avenue, and in the Springdale subdivision funded by a 2025 voter-approved tax hike.

• Lincoln-Way East students walk out after classmates, coach caught making racist comments (suntimes.com) — Allegations of racist taunts at a girls cross-country meet in Western Springs have drawn legal threats from Homewood-Flossmoor High School and sparked a student walkout at Lincoln-Way East. Students in Frankfort say they want to show solidarity with H-F and make clear such behavior does not represent their school, while district officials dispute the cross-country allegations.

• Jerry Nerad (thehinsdalean.com) — Longtime business leader and Illini supporter Jerry Nerad is remembered for a life of family, entrepreneurship, and philanthropy that began with his and Ann's early married years in Western Springs. The couple welcomed their two daughters here before moving to Hinsdale, and friends locally are invited to honor his legacy at a Celebration of Life in Illinois this October.
