📰 News we're reading
1. Indianapolis pauses new data centers through 2027 as officials weigh tougher rules (thecooldown.com) — Indianapolis has halted approvals for new data centers through 2027, giving city officials time to craft stronger zoning rules that balance jobs and tax revenue with concerns over energy use, water demand, and neighborhood impacts. The Metropolitan Development Commission approved the pause 6-0, while council members and advocates now turn to outside studies, public input, and upcoming tax abatement decisions for major projects already in the pipeline.

2. Indy is locked into funding hundreds of police positions it can't fill (mirrorindy.org) — Indianapolis must keep funding 1,743 police positions through at least 2028, even though IMPD has struggled for years to hire enough officers, meaning much of that money now goes to overtime. Residents can weigh in on this spending at a Sept. 9 City-County Council committee hearing, where IMPD will present its 2027 budget and take public comment.

3. Indy Man Arrested After North Side Car Theft Spree (wibc.com) — A man with a long history in the Marion County Jail is back in custody after police say he stole a car near 50th and Illinois and was later found overdosing in it with stolen items on Indy's north side. Neighbors in Butler-Tarkington and Meridian-Kessler are questioning why the court system repeatedly released him despite earlier similar charges.

4. Why Indiana's public university tuition freeze might lead to higher costs (wishtv.com) — Indiana's two-year tuition freeze means in-state students, including those at IU Indianapolis, won't see sticker-price increases until at least 2027, but reduced state aid and rising living costs may still leave families stretched. Experts warn that without extra state funding, universities may cut services, raise other tuition categories, or later hike rates sharply once the freeze ends.
